Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior political figure stated the attack left him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
