The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
