Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
