Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
